About Trade Certificate

Trade certificate (Form 17) has been enacted as per the proviso of Sec 39 of MV Act. As per Rule 33 of CMV Rules, a motor vehicle in possession of any manufacturer or dealer or importer of motor vehicle or testing agency specified in Rule 126 of CMVR shall be exempted from necessity of registration subject to condition that it has obtained trade certificate. As per Rule 33 the registering authority in whose jurisdiction the applicant has his place of business can issue the trade certificate. Rule 41 of CMVR defines the purposes for which unregistered motor vehicle having trade registration mark may be used at public place. The applicant will apply on line in Form 16 for ‘Grant or Renewal of Trade Certificate and Trade Registration Marks’. Based on ‘Number of trade registration marks required’, the applicant will have to online deposit the requisite fees. The application by a dealer should also be accompanied by “Certificate of Authorization by Manufacturer of Motor Vehicles” in Form 16 A. As per Rule 37 of CMV Rules, the trade certificate can be granted for a period of five years from the date of issue. Trade certificate can be renewed further for 5 years by applying for renewal and depositing the prescribed renewal fee. The trade certificate owner can also apply in Form 17B for ‘Grant of Additional Trade Registration Marks’ as well as in Form 17C for ‘Intimation for Change of Address of Place of Business’ by depositing the prescribed fee.
